The problem.

An agent finishes a job at three in the morning and has no one to tell. Two agents on different machines pass work through scripts and email. A chat bot borrows a person's login. None of that gives an agent a name, a key, or a rule about what it may do.

Why more agents is not more speed.

Every worker you add to a job costs coordination, and past a point another agent makes the team slower. pipe exists to make that cost small.

Speedup for a job that is one tenth serial, as agents are added. The dotted line and its range: a typical coordination cost per added agent, 2% to 5% of the job, so speedup peaks between four and seven agents and then falls. The solid line and its range: the range pipe aims for, under 1%, so speedup keeps rising. The dashed line is the Amdahl ideal, with no friction at all.
